Nowadays it is possible to cure life threatening diseases. Although costing in thousand even millions, it doesn’t matter as long you survive. Scientist doesn’t stop discovering new things, finding new ways which will let people live longer. But not all see it as beneficial instead they see it as harmful and even damaging. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center researchers performed the first nerve cell transplant into the brain of a 62 year old woman due to stroke. It was injected by a nerve cell or neurons. It is the first trial transplant performed and was under observation to know if the procedure was safe and compatible to the human body. The patient was observed and no major complications found.
One of the most important tools used in stem cell transplantation is the embryo transplant microscope. Since cell can’t be seen by our naked eye this apparatus was used. Through the use of an embryo transplant microscope scientist will have an idea if the specimen will be compatible to the recipient.
Transplants of any damaged part of the human body are now possible to replace. Since stem cell is already available, stem cell has the ability of producing another tissue or organ of the human body. It can also help in problems related with infertility and birth defects.
Stem cell was first studied in animals’ particularly in mice and one of the apparatus used was the embryo transplant microscope in studying the embryo. Scientist later tried to do it on humans which became a controversy. Many debates and protest was heard because some people are not favor in stem cell or embryonic transplantation. There are still a lot of studies and research regarding stem cell that should be done because of the possibility to fail during or after the therapy. When the cell differentiate in a disorganized manner this will produce many cell types which will not be compatible for transplantation in human body, else it will develop into stem cell tumor and graft rejection.
Disease free cells can be used in transplants and cure all types of diseases. Like for example the cells of pancreas can treat diabetes, and nerve cell implants for repairing damaged in a particular area of the brain can treat Parkinson’s, stroke, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The immune system has the tendency to refuse cells that are foreign to the beneficiary. Cyclosporine is an immune suppressive chemical used to prohibit rejection of the transplant.
Even stem cells that came from the human embryo can be assured to produce same embryo. They may not able to form an embryo into a womb. Further research and study will be conducted producing embryo thru stem cell. The research team and medical community rejoiced to the decision of the Department of Health and Human Services permitting the stem cells research to continue. But this was protested by a spokes person of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops for allowing the stem cell research to continue because it tolerates embryo destruction which according to the Church are already life form or human beings.
