More and more pet owners are starting to treat their “best friends” as their children. In US alone, there are about 78 percent of pet owners who demand veterinarians’ full liability over owners’ pets. As a result, the number of developments in veterinary medicine multiplied. This was the medical institutions’ answer to the increasing clamor for improvement.

The advancements in the instruments for veterinary medicine for the past decade were able to aid in maintaining the welfare of the animals. Instruments for veterinary medicines now may be classified into three Ts—the taking instruments, the testing instruments, and the taming instruments.

Biopsy instruments

Biopsy instruments are used to accompany the inspection of tissues and fluids from the body of the animals for laboratory testing purposes. Most of us are familiar with biopsy being a determining method to a person’s cause of death. However, only a handful of people are aware that nowadays biopsy instruments are used for veterinary medicines.

Known biopsy instruments for veterinary medicines are bone marrow biopsy/aspiration needle, disposable skin punch, and osty core bone biopsy needle.
The bone marrow biopsy/aspiration needle is used as an instrument to get samples of bone marrow tissues. In doing so, veterinarians are able to look into the possibility of curing or mitigating effects of blood-related diseases of animals. This is used in aiding leukemia and myeloma (a condition wherein a malignant tumor appeared by the bone marrow cells).

Consequently, osty core bone biopsy needles are important in deducing samples for bone-related diseases such as osteoporosis, which is common to captive animals and is usually a result of lack of fluoride and calcium. You may be wondering why needles are that important. Well, imagine injecting without the needle. Do you think the process is possible without the thin needle? You see without this little needle the medicine can never be infused. Without the needle no sample can ever be retrieved.

The disposable skin punch, on the other hand, is far from injections. Note that a biopsy punch is a screw-like instrument which penetrates fatty tissues through creating a hole from the skin to the tissues.  Veterinarians press the skin punch down in a clockwise direction and in a “screwing” manner.

The skin which was punched out will rise above the skin surface. The excess will then be removed by tweezers and the sample is placed on a suitable container.

Diagnostic instruments

Instruments for veterinary medicine usually serve as testing media. Diagnostic instruments are not to help an animal’s treatment but, like biopsy instruments, are to determine a particular disease your pet incurred. Remember, without any diagnosis you may never know if your pet has a severe disease or not. This is the why regular check-ups are initiated by veterinarians.  As such, diagnostic instruments like audioscopes, laryngeal mirrors, and retinoscopes help in testing animals’ health conditions.

Audioscopes are for detecting hearing impairment. This otoscope-and-audiometer instrument rolled into one tests the capability of the animal’s auditory system. Imagine if it weren’t for this instrument you may never know if your pet already has auditory problems. Another diagnostic instrument for veterinary medicine is the laryngeal mirrors. These are used to identify any inflammation and abnormalities in the larynx of the animals.

A retinoscope likewise is an instrument to examine probable disease. It is applied in checking light’s refraction in the eye. It somehow tests your pet’s vision, and if there are any abnormalities or infections.

Restraining instruments

For a veterinarian to successfully examine your pet, he will have to find the way to tame the animal. This is when restraining instruments come in handy. However, don’t be frightened because these instruments for veterinarian medicines are not meant to harm the animals.

Restraining instruments are important in making your pet vulnerable to injections and inspections. It will somehow “tame” them. Remember, if they are running around then veterinarians will not be able to do their job properly. Worse, something terrible may happen to your pet if such scenario can’t be controlled. So, restraining instruments like mouth gags, nose rings, nose pincers, and applicators for nose ring became popular over the years.

Mouth gags are used for keeping your pet’s mouth open. Such instrument is useful when aspirins and other medicines are to be induced by animals. If mouth gags are for holding animals’ mouths, nose rings and nose pincers are for holding your pet’s nose while the veterinarian inspects it. However, to be able to put the nose ring into your pet’s snout the veterinarian must use applicators for nose ring. Without the applicator for nose ring, no nose ring will be attached to your pet’s nose.

Caring for your pet’s health doesn’t stop with getting him vaccinated. There are still a lot of things to consider. Regular check-up is a must. Remember, prevention is better than cure.
